At Chesapeake Automotive Equipment we offer some great Pro Spot Welders for our customers to use in their shops for top-of- the-line repairs. In this article, we are referencing the Pro Spot SP-5 DP and SP-5.3 MIG Welders and some great tech tips on stitch welding.
In the collision repair industry, we sometimes need to use a ‘Stop and Go’ method or Stitch Weld method to control the heat (this is when you stop and go, making a series of tack welds to complete a seam). It’s mainly used to control the hheat-affected zone when repairing thinner, yet stronger materials in today’s vehicles. A stitch weld is a continuous weld that is made in small segments, stopping briefly between welds to allow some cooling.
Tech Tip: Make Smoother Stitch Welds by changing the Drop Cut feature on the SP-5.3 and SP-5DP MIG Welders.
The Synergic Curves / Welding Programs that are pre-set for steel are designed for continuous weld beads.
Turning the “Drop Cut” feature OFF will give a smoother transition to the ‘stop and go’ of a stitch weld.

SP-5 DP | SINGLE PHASE DOUBLE PULSE.
The SP-5 Double Pulse MIG Welder was designed with microprocessor controls and weld programs specifically geared for the collision repair industry. Applications include Aluminum MIG/MAG, MIG Brazing, Steel MIG/MAG, Root Welding, TIG and MMA/Stick Welding.
Single Phase MIG Welder
Industrial strength and ready for heavy welding applications in the shop.
Auto Switching
To switch welding different base metals, simply pick up the appropriate torch and pull the trigger, the microprocessor and weld programs do the rest.
Double Pulse
Safely and confidently repair aluminum and steel with automatically controlled pulse welding.
MIG Welding
Features three MIG welding torches and wire spools. Also includes preloaded weld programs and synergic curves for all common welding situations in automotive repair.
Multiple Welding Processes
Accessing multiple applications is as simple as pressing a button and making your selection.
AUTO SWITCHING
Simply pick up the appropriate torch for the base metal you want to weld and pull the trigger — the SP-5 DP will automatically switch the weld program and synergic curve — no need to change wire spools or shielding gas.
